State Protocol releases burial plan for Major Mahama

- The event will begin with filing past the body at the forecourt of the State House on Thursday and end with two separate final funeral rites at Bole and Tumu respectively.

The State Protocol Department (SPD) has released the burial arrangements for Major Maxwell Mahama, whose death at the hand of a Denkyira Obuasi mob on last week shocked the nation.

According to a statement released by the SPD, the burial will kick off at 7pm on Thursday night with a vigil at the Arakan Officers Mess.

The body of the late major will be moved from the 37 Military Hospital Morgue to the forecourt of the State House for filing past on Friday. This will take place between 6am and 9am.

The body will then be taken to the Osu Cemetery for burial. This will be preceded by a burial service.

The final funeral rite will be held at the forecourt of the State House immediately after the burial.

A thanksgiving service with be held at the Qodesh branch of the Lighthouse Chapel International at North Kaneshie in Accra from 10:30am.

A final funeral rite will be held at Bole in the Nothern Region from June 13 to June 15 while another will be held at Tumu in the Upper West Region from June 16 to June 18.

Police say Major Maxwell Mahama was killed last week while embarking on a 20 kilometre walk at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region.

Some women from whom he had stopped to buy snails mistook him for a thief after seeing an official pistol he tied to his waist and called the area's assembly man to report what they had seen, police say.

The assembly man, William Baah, then organised people in the town to lynch the major who he believed to be a robber, according to the police account of event.

More than 40 people, including women, have been arrested for allegedly participating in the killing.
