Williams, who won her 18th Grand Slam singles title in New York earlier this month, beat Jelena Jankovic for last year's Beijing title and also captured this Chinese event back in 2004.
Meanwhile, the French Open runner-up Halep handled Chinese Lin Zhu 7-5, 6-4 and the fourth-seeded former top-ranked star Sharapova shut down Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center. Sharapova was the Beijing runner-up two years ago.
