Miami Open: Serena Williams wins her historic 700 wins by beating Sabine Lisicki

In the Miami Open the World number one Serena Williams overcame a dreadful second set to beat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 7-6(4) 1-6 6-3 for her 700th career win and a tie up in the Miami Open semi-finals.

After win the match, she become joins with Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Lindsay Davenport and Conchita Martinez in achieving the milestone after her battling quarterfinal win.

The world number one, a 19-time grand slam champion, edged a first set tiebreak against her 27th seeded opponent, who then took advantage of Williams’ inconsistency to take the match to a decider.

On the men’s side World number four Andy Murray booked his semi-final berth at the Miami Masters on Wednesday, rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Austrian Dominic thiem. He will face eighth seed Tomas Berdych who defeated Argentine Juan Monaco 6-3 6-4.

In the semi, Williams will face Romania’s Simona Halep for a place in the final after the third seed beat Sloane Stephens 6-1 7-5. Williams won the first set only because Lisicki wobbled in the tiebreaker, hitting three shots into the net before double faulting on the final point.

In the history of Golf, She is the eighth woman in the Open era to reach 700 match wins – although she is still well behind the record holder Martina Navratilova, who claimed 1,442 career victories.

To her record the 33-year-old American was presented with a colorful 700 with flower cake following the match but admitted she was oblivious.

After the end of the historic match Williams said, “I didn’t know I had 700 wins,” “I just want to keep doing, doing the best that I can. Just staying positive and winning as much as I can.
